Does merging WAV files lose any quality?

The output is uncompressed PCM audio, so it is never run through a lossy codec such as MP3 or AAC. You can merge the same file over and over without the quality degrading. There is one exception worth knowing about: the merged file is always 16-bit. If your sources are 24-bit or 32-bit float, they are reduced to 16-bit on the way out.

What bit depth and sample rate will the merged file use?

The bit depth is always 16-bit PCM, whatever the source files use. The sample rate and channel count are taken from the first file in the list. If you are editing a project at 24-bit and need to keep that depth, merge inside your audio editor instead. This tool cannot write 24-bit output.

Yes. The first file sets the sample rate and number of channels, and every file after it is resampled or remixed to match. A mono file placed after a stereo one is spread to stereo, and a 44.1 kHz file after a 48 kHz one is resampled up. For the cleanest result, put your highest quality file first, or use files recorded with the same settings.

Yes. The files are joined in the order shown, and you can drag them into any order before merging. The first file is also the one that decides the output's sample rate and channel count.

Does the tool add gaps, crossfades, or normalize the volume?

Accepted Answer

No. Each file starts on the exact sample where the previous one ended. The tool does not insert silence, fade between files, or match their loudness, so a quiet take stays quiet and any silence or click already at the edges of a recording stays there. Trim your files first if you want a seamless join.

Will the merged file keep markers, cue points, or metadata?

No. The merged file is written fresh and contains the audio only. Cue points, region markers, loop points, broadcast wave timestamps, and any artist or title fields in the source files are not carried over.

No. This tool accepts files with a.wav extension or a WAV file type, and quietly ignores anything else you drop in. Convert those files to WAV first, then merge the results.

How large can the merged WAV file be?

The WAV format stores its length in a 32-bit field, which puts a hard ceiling of roughly 4 GB on any WAV file. At CD quality that is about six and a half hours of stereo audio. In practice your browser will run out of memory before that, because the merged file is built in memory before you download it. If a large merge fails, merge in batches and then join those results.
